The specialty fruit grown in the high mountains is still “burning out”.
Huong Khe district (Ha Tinh province) has more than 2,000 hectares of orange trees, concentrated in Loc Yen, Huong Tra and Huong Thuy communes. Huong Do commune is the capital of the most famous Khe May oranges, with about 300 households growing oranges, with a total area of over 320ha.
Orange trees have a height of 2-8m, planted about 3m apart. In the past few months, Khe May oranges are ripe and bright yellow, and people have begun to harvest them. Previously, people used nets or wrapped bags to prevent the fruit from being invaded by ants or insects.
When harvesting, people will lower the cover and taste the fruit right in the garden to check the quality before selling to customers.
“The fruits are unusually red, we know it’s broken, don’t meet the standards, so we pick them and discard them. Khe May oranges are fragrant and have a deep sweet taste. The variety of oranges grown in this land is different from other oranges on the market. school,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Trung (35 years old).
Mr. Nguyen Van Trung’s family has 800 orange trees grown on the hill, mainly Xa Doai and V2 oranges, estimated to harvest 2 tons of fruit.
“This year due to the erratic weather, the tree produces less fruit than usual, but the price is good. Currently, Khe May oranges are sold at the garden at 60,000-90,000 VND / kg”, Mr. Trung said.
According to the leader of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Huong Khe district, Khe May oranges are grown according to VietGAP standards and are stamped with traceability and brand names when put on the market.
People have a hard time during the harvest season. After selecting and cutting the fruit, they will collect it in a lane that can hold about 10kg and then carry it down the hill with their shoulders.
Due to the terrain characteristics, people use specialized vehicles in agriculture to harvest oranges. According to many people, this year oranges are priced well, but they do not have enough goods to supply the market.
Khe May oranges are currently sold in other provinces and cities in the country such as Hanoi, Nghe An, Ho Chi Minh City… After deducting costs, this orange helps garden owners earn from 200 million VND to billions. copper per case.
Mr. Nguyen Hong Son, Chairman of Huong Do Commune People’s Committee, said that in recent years, Khe May oranges have become a trademark and a specialty of Huong Khe in particular and Ha Tinh in general.
“Growing Khe May oranges helps many families have a stable income, completely changing their lives,” said Mr. Son.
