The old farmer earns half a billion dong in the Tet season thanks to the red ripe fruit inside and out
Thanks to the special pomelo variety, the fruit when ripe is red from the peel to the segment, with a pleasant aroma, a family in Thanh Hoa earns half a billion dong per Tet crop.
At the beginning of December, the Luan Van red pomelo garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Tu’s family (54 years old, in Tho Xuong commune, Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) was in full maturity, emitting a characteristic and pleasant fragrance.
Mr. Tu’s family currently owns more than 3ha of Luan Van red grapefruit. He said, Luan Van village’s red pomelo has been famous since ancient times because of its aroma, the fruit when ripe is red from peel to segment. In the past, this pomelo variety was used to promote the king during Tet holidays.
Today, Luan Van red grapefruit is loved by many people to buy as a tray of five fruits on New Year ‘s Day to pray for luck and prosperity.
According to Mr. Tu, Luan Van red pomelo begins to bear fruit after about 3 years after planting. When young, the fruit is green like normal pomelos. By mid-October of the lunar calendar, pomelos begin to turn red, from the inside out. On average, a pomelo root has 60-100 fruits.
With an area of more than 3 hectares, each Tet season Mr. Tu’s family exports to the market about 6,000 Luan Van red pomelos.
“Like the Tet crop in 2022, my family sells about 6,000 fruits. With the price of 80,000 VND/fruit in the garden, that season I earn about 500 million VND. Red pomelo has large fruit weighing 1.5-1.8kg/fruit, small fruit weighing about 1kg This year, I expect to sell 6,000-7,000. The price of red pomelos this year may be higher than previous years because gardeners have lost their crops, and frost and adverse weather have made pomelos. It is expected that the price of pomelos this year is about 100,000 VND / large fruit. Although there is still a month until the Lunar New Year, my garden has already had customers ordering about 3,000 fruits, they will come back to cut them in a few days.” Tu shared.
According to garden owner Nguyen Van Tu, Luan Van red pomelo is grown mainly by the method of cuttings. In addition to growing pomelo to sell fruit, Mr. Tu also earns extra income from selling seedlings. On average, for each seedling, Mr. Tu sells to the market for 70,000 to 100,000 VND.($1=25,000 VND)
In order for the pomelos to be of good quality on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, Mr. Tu is pruning the poor quality and small fruits.
Luan Van pomelo is bright red, succulent and has a light sweet taste, cool, characteristic aroma when ripe.
Tu shared, the older the Luan Van red pomelo, the better the quality compared to the younger trees. Currently, his family’s garden has pomelos that are 10 to 15 years old. The pomelos are stout, tall and firm.
Mr. Le Trung Hieu – Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Tho Xuong commune, Tho Xuan district said that although it is a famous pomelo variety in the locality, Luan Van pomelo was once in danger of losing its variety.
In 2005, the Luan Van pomelo variety was included in the program to restore and develop specialty fruit trees of Thanh Hoa province. By 2010, the whole district of Tho Xuan planted 2,000 trees. In 2013, in order to preserve and develop the Luan Van pomelo variety, with the support of relevant sectors, Tho Xuong commune propagated and mobilized a number of experienced farmers to participate in the conservation and development project. Luan Van pomelo development, at the same time support in seedling, fertilizer, science and technology transfer. Up to now, the whole commune has over 35ha of
