Release nearly 100 kg sea turtles into the wild

QUANG TRI – Sea turtles were hit by waves on the shore of Vinh Thai commune, Vinh Linh district were discovered by people and reported to the conservation area before being released back into the wild.

Around 5 pm on October 8, while mending nets in Tan Mach village, Vinh Thai commune, 5 fishermen and two students discovered a large sea turtle washed ashore. The turtle has a shell length of 1.16 m, a shell width of 0.86 m, and an estimated weight of about 100 kg.

Upon receiving the news, the Management Board of Con Co Island Marine Reserve immediately showed up for a health check, tagged with the identification number VN (C) 00029, and together with local authorities and fishermen released sea turtles into the wild.

Nguyen Van Hoa, Director of the Management Board of Con Co Island Marine Reserve, said this is the fourth sea turtle to be rescued and released into the ocean in 2022.

Sea turtles, also known as snails, scientific name Chelonia mydas, are one of five species of sea turtles appearing in the waters of Quang Tri province.
