Raise the ugliest, strangest fish on the planet, climb trees quickly as a pet
Giant Mudskipper is raised by Mr. Le Van Vo (Ca Mau province) as a pet in his pond. In the wild, mudskippers are only 1-2 fingers big, but in Mr. Vo’s pond, the fishes are as adorable as pets.
Ca Mau is considered the “capital” of mudskippers. This fish prefers to live in riverside, coastal mudflats, or burrow in mangrove forests.
Giant Mudskipper belongs to the family of white gobies, small in size about 1-2 fingers. The fish has a rather ugly appearance with large bulging eyes on the head, the whole body is brown, with 2 black stripes connecting the eyes to the tail, and on the body, there are many small white spots.
In particular, this fish is also listed by the World Organisms as one of the 6 “strangest animals on the planet” because of its unique structural features. They can live both on land and in water, swim fast, burrow well, and climb trees.
It is the preeminent characteristic that not all saltwater aquatic species have. mudskipper fish. He has been tamed and brought back to raise as a pet.

Mr. Vo said that he was born and raised in salt water, and from a young age he was familiar with the image of mudskippers on the alluvial banks of the river. He had the opportunity to visit many places and saw many ornamental fish farmers build cafes for visitors. This struck Mr. Vo’s mind, making him think of making a similar model but the object is a mudskipper.
“In 2019, I dug a small pond in front of my yard, caught mudskippers, and released them to try. In the wild, mudskippers are agile but very shy, so it’s quite difficult to catch, only a few at a time.
At one point, I kept almost 200 fish in a pond. Due to a large number of fish, the fish fought each other for food, and due to the cramped environment, the fish was also lost, so I had to let go. Currently, the fish in my pond is stable at about 60 fish,” Vo shared.
Revealing the secret of taming tree-climbing fish, Mr. Vo said that in the pond he dropped foam boards as a substrate for mudskippers to climb up when the water was high, when the water was low, they entered the cave. The food of the school is seaweed, trash fish.
In order for the fish to “get used to the air”, Mr. Vo has to be patient for a long time to get used to them. When it is safe, mudskippers will come to the shore to eat prey.
“Every day, I feed the fish twice a day, sometimes forgetting to feed on time, they see my figure from afar, raised my head, and swam back to the foam board waiting to eat. Mussels are very greedy, they have full of bait in their mouths. swim to another place, finish eating, then come back to eat again. Sometimes when hungry, the fish won’t eat, fighting “crack the head, cut the forehead”, and drop all the food into the water”, Mr. Vo witty told about the school of fish as said. about small children.
Being “loved like a child” by the owner, he does not have to hunt for food like in the wild, so Mr. Vo’s group of mudskippers is full of fat, each one is so big that everyone who sees it is surprised, thinking it is a fish. four stars.
“The fish I raise weighs 4 fish/kg, but no one believes me until I get home and see the market,” Vo laughed.
According to Mr. Vo, it is quite difficult for mudskippers to breed in the pond because in the wild they pair up to mate, so if you want fish to breed, you have to dig a larger pond, creating an environment similar to mudflats. .
After 3 years of working with the fish, Mr. Vo considers the mudskippers as pets, with no intention of selling or exploiting the meat. In the near future, he plans to expand the pond and increase the number of fish for people to visit.
