After many years of working as a worker away from home, Mr. Doi quit his job and returned to his hometown, alone in the forest to build a shack to raise cows, determined to get rich, surprising many people…

Billions of cows

People in the Buon neighborhood, Muong Lat town, Muong Lat district (Thanh Hoa) pointed straight at the forest in front of them and said “find Vi Van Doi (30 years old) there”. The guide is a winding road, bends, vertical slope, lying across the hill, to the farm of Mr. Doi.

Stopping after operating the lawn mower, chopping bananas for the cows, Mr. Doi talked about his journey into the deep green forest.

After graduating from high school, in 2011, Mr. Doi worked as a worker at an electronics company in Hai Duong province, with a stable income of 12 million VND/month. When the Covid-19 epidemic hit, Mr. Doi quit his job and returned to his hometown with the intention of getting rich in his hometown.

Due to the harsh climate of the border region, the barren land, and only livestock, Mr. Doi proposed the idea of raising cows for breeding and fattening to his family.

In early 2021, Mr. Doi led his family’s breeding cows across the hills, deep into the forest, set up a shack, and started his entrepreneurial journey to the surprise of the whole family.

After setting up the shack, Mr. Doi planned in detail what to plant for the family’s more than 5ha hill to serve livestock. 1,000 banana bushes, many gardens of cassava, corn and elephant grass were planted by Mr. Doi on the family’s land. Along with that, he borrowed from friends and relatives to buy 50 cows, of which 10 were born and 40 were fattened.

Fully cared for and fed, after 6 months, the first herd of cows was sold. The profit amount, he waits to turn the capital to buy more cows and maintain the model.

On average, Mr. Doi sells 2 batches of fattening cows each year, with a large batch of 20 cows. Each cow sells for 20-25 million VND. As for the breeding cows, if there are any offspring, the family continues to raise or provide breeds for the villagers. Every year, cows bring his family an income of half a billion dong.

According to the young man, in order to maintain the model, there were times when he also encountered many difficulties, worried about epidemics, and dealing with the devaluation of cows. For example, at the end of 2021, the price of cows “sloped without braking”, at that time he suffered a heavy loss.

Recently, cows are being priced, customers come to ask to buy a lot. Mr. Doi currently has 20 cows that can be released from the barn. This is the second batch of cows he sold this year. Mr. Wait calculates, selling this litter can “pocket” a few hundred million dong. It is expected that, by Tet , the camp will produce more litters.

Open the way out of poverty

Not only good husbandry, Mr. Doi also went online to search for many varieties of plants suitable for the soil and climate of the border district. After doing research, he imported the experimental variety of Thai hybrid maize and cassava with bamboo leaves.

According to Mr. Doi, 2-corn maize is a strange variety, giving a much higher yield than the previous pure maize variety. And bamboo leaves cassava for large tubers, many tubers, high starch content.

“Seeing that my family’s corn has up to 2 corns, big, long, and many seeds; cassava leaves with large roots and a lot of flour, households come to their homes to ask for seeds to plant,” Mr. Doi said.

Mr. Doi’s high-yielding maize and cassava varieties have been grown in the upland areas of neighboring communes such as Tam Chung and Quang Chieu.

Succeeding with cows, greening the barren hills with high-yielding varieties of cassava and maize, Mr. Doi is also agile in seizing opportunities. He became the focal point to supply seeds and products ( bamboo shoots, cassava, corn, bananas) for people.

Not only doing business well, Mr. Doi also participates in mass activities. Currently, he is the Secretary of the Buon Quarter Branch.

Secretary of the Party Cell and Head of Buon Quarter Ha Van Nhiem spent a lot of admiration talking about the Secretary of the neighborhood Youth Union. According to Mr. Nhiem, Mr. Doi has invested 300 million VND to open 2 roads, creating favorable conditions for people to transport agricultural products from high hills.

Previously, each harvest season of corn and cassava, the road was less than 1m wide, making it difficult to travel and transport agricultural products. When it rains, the road is slippery, people can only carry or transport agricultural products by motorbike. Unable to harvest in time, corn and cassava were washed away by floods.

“Now that situation is no more,” Mr. Nhiem said.

Secretary of the Muong Lat District Union Lau Van Fai commented, Mr. Vi Van Doi is the Secretary of the Union, who is dynamic, enthusiastic and has an economic mindset. Mr. Doi succeeds with the model of raising and cultivating with high economic efficiency. Recently, in order to expand the model with the villagers to get rich, Mr. Doi boldly established Muong Lat agro-forestry service development cooperative.
