In 2018, Dong Phuong Bakery (Dong Phuong Bakery) of a Vietnamese family in New Orleans, Louisiana (USA) became the first Vietnamese bakery to win the James Bread Award (an extremely prestigious and famous culinary award. prestigious worldwide reputation for nearly 70 years). Vietnamese bread seems to have taken another step to be recognized by the world for its sophistication in processing as well as taste.
With its popularity, Vietnamese bread has been completely included in the Oxford dictionary, which is considered an important milestone of the country’s cuisine. The achievement right after appearing in the world’s most prestigious English dictionary was outstanding when bread immediately appeared on many major information sites. The Guardian newspaper called banh mi “the best sandwich in the world”, topping the list of 12 street foods voted by the US travel magazine Condé’ Nast Traveler, and National Geographic magazine voted Vietnamese bread as one of the top 12 street foods. 11 of the world’s best street foods and finally entered the top 20 of the world’s best street foods by Huffington Post.

In particular, after ranking on the world culinary map, banh mi also “aired” on the Google homepage in more than 10 countries to celebrate the day Vietnamese bread was included in the dictionary.
Although the traditional banh mi meat is present everywhere, each region and each city has its own variations to suit the geography and taste of diners. There are “strange” fillings such as filter powder, dried black beef, shredded chicken, dried shumai, etc. as popular as fish cakes, shredded chicken or ancestral bread.
