Ms. Ho Thi Hai, a member of the Women’s Cooperative Group for sub-economic models in Vinh Hiep commune, Vinh Chau town (Soc Trang), harvested the first sea crab crop.

Ms. Giau confided: “When I started raising crabs, I followed the instructions on farming techniques of the “sponsor” unit – Toan Thang Fisheries Cooperative, Vinh Hiep commune. must be careful from the stage of water treatment in the pond, measuring the salinity of the water, choosing the seed… to the use of food for crabs”.

With the number of 1,500 seed crabs, Ms. Giau divides them equally among 2 ponds (each pond has an area of 2,000m2). When the crabs reach the right size, she separates the female crabs with signs on bricks to transfer to another pond to raise separately.

According to market prices, meat crabs cost about 200,000 VND/kg (3-4 fish/kg), while brick crab costs 300,000 VND/kg or more. Therefore, the classification from the beginning has made tracking, care and recruitment easier.

Also a member of quality crab farming with the earliest harvest time in the cooperative group, Ms. Pham Thuy An happily expressed: “At first, I thought that crab farming would be difficult because it was just an experiment. However, thanks to the correct rearing process and careful care, the crabs grow very quickly and are sure of meat, so the granaries are very satisfied.

Although there was a small loss of peaks, the number of harvested crabs exceeded half of the original stocking stock, such a ratio was considered satisfactory. In the next crab season, I will pay attention to the quality and quantity of crabs to be even higher.”

In Vinh Hiep commune, Ms. Ho Thi Hai’s family specializes in white-leg shrimp farming. To have more income, Ms. Hai joined the crab farming model of the women’s cooperative group.

Shared by the members, with instructions on farming techniques, Ms. Hai’s first crab farming crop was also well-harvested. Currently, every day, Ms. Hai has crabs to retail or remove termites for seafood stalls, creating a new source of income for the family.

According to the leader of the Women’s Cooperative Group with sub-economic models in Vinh Hiep Commune, Ly Thi Ngoc Yen, the cooperative group was established in July 2022, with 55 members. The cooperative group was established with the aim of creating favorable conditions for women’s members to learn, share experiences in aquaculture, apply science and technology, access the market, encourage women to start a business, and contribute part of raising income, performing tasks of local economic development.

According to the plan, the 40 members of the cooperative group will experiment with sea crab farming and plan to stock up after the crab crop (the remaining members who are not eligible for crab farming are experimenting with other aquaculture). The initial advantage of the members is support from the Center for International Cooperation in Aquaculture and Fisheries Sustainability (ICAFIS) and the International Organization for Conservation of Nature (WWF).

Accordingly, ICAFIS will support 30 million VND for members to buy seed crabs and WWF will support 20 million VND for operating expenses of the cooperative group, through the representative of Toan Thang Fisheries Cooperative.

Information about the initial effectiveness of the women’s cooperative crab farming model, comrade Tran Thi Diem My – Chairwoman of the Vinh Hiep Commune Women’s Union shared: “The cooperative group established and selected the farming model. Sea crabs are caused by aquaculture, which is the main direction in the development of the local collective economy.

With the advantage of stocking ponds available at home, members do not have to spend capital to build ponds, can use natural fish in shrimp ponds as food for crabs, reducing costs. There are members who have tried farming before, from the initial understanding, they are trained by specialized units in farming techniques, and have access to support capital from organizations, so it is more convenient.”

Currently, the total area of crab ponds of the commune women’s cooperative group is 125ha, in which, each member has at least 1 pond, with an area of 3,000m2.

Each crab crop from stocking to harvest takes about 4 months, after deducting costs, members earn from over 5 million VND to more than 30 million VND, and no member suffers a loss. It can be said that the initial success of the cooperative group is a bright spot in the collective economic model of women in Vinh Hiep commune, Vinh Chau town (Soc Trang province).

Currently, members of this cooperative group are learning more about the models of pelagic fish farming, and mullet farming combined with shrimp farming, members are considering, which models are feasible and will be tested.
