After graduating from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Bich Van (SN 1992, Ninh Thuan) had been working for a while, but her family had an accident, so she went back to her hometown. During this time, Van was given a small paper flower by a friend, found it beautiful, so she learned to follow it. Initially, Bich Van only made flowers of small size, but when she discovered the need to decorate with giant flowers, she researched and studied how to make them and sold them. Since then, Van has quit her job in medicine and chosen to work as a giant flower.

Bich Van said giant flowers are the hottest in Vietnam in the past 2 years, especially litchi flowers. To make a giant flower tree, Van takes a lot of time: “With the new flower pattern, it takes me about 2-3 days to research how to complete it. After that, once you have the recipe, it will be faster and easier to make flowers . ”
The cost of flowers will depend on the material, but in general, each flower plant in Van shop costs an average of about 500,000 VND. Usually, customers place orders about 7-10 days in advance and she only receives 3-4 orders/day to ensure product quality. During the festive season, the market’s demand is so high that every customer wants to get the goods urgently, so one day she has to receive 6-7 orders.

Currently, in addition to her brother’s support for attaching lights and screws, she also has to hire more employees to work with her in shifts. However, the workload is still quite large: “In the evening, I often shoot and make TikTok clips to share how to make flowers with people or advise customers. So there are days when I only sleep 2-3 hours, sometimes I have to stay up for several nights in a row to work overtime to keep up with the order” .
Peak month up to 50 – 60 orders
In addition to her main job as a primary school teacher, Dam Thi Yen (born in 1990, Vinh Phuc) also has a passion for crafts. She has known and started making giant flowers since 2019. At this time, giant flowers are not popular in Vietnam, so orders come to a halt, and only Yen and her husband do.

In 2020, due to the impact of the epidemic, the Yen couple’s flower-making work was more or less interrupted. By this year, when life was back to normal, giant flowers flourished, the shop received many orders from event and decoration parties, so Yen had to recruit part-time staff to support.
“In the peak month, my shop receives about 5-7 large event orders and about 50 small decoration orders. Because it takes a lot of time, effort and meticulousness, giant flowers are more expensive than silk flowers on the market,” she said.

Yen said that to make a giant flower requires a lot of time and meticulousness, so the work is divided quite clearly: “The raw part will be done by the staff and I directly do the pistil, dye the wings, … – stages that require care. In the end, my husband is the one who handles the base and wires . ” Time is also the biggest difficulty for Yen. Currently, her main job is still a teacher, so the time left for giant flowers is quite little. When there are many orders, Yen and his wife have to stay up at night to make it up.
