Location of Ngoan Muc Pass Ninh Thuan
Ninh Thuan Ngoan Muc Pass, also known as Song Pha Pass (or Krong Pha), is an important route connecting the two provinces of Lam Dong and Ninh Thuan. Located on Highway 27, this pass divides the boundary between Ninh Son and Ninh Thuan districts and Don Duong district, Lam Dong. Built during the French colonial period, this route has the purpose of connecting Phan Rang with Da Lat. Over a century, Ngoan Muc Pass has undergone significant repair and expansion investment.

Ngoan Muc Pass is not only the road connecting the two provinces of Lam Dong – Ninh Thuan but also the gateway to the coastal provinces of the South Central Coast and the Central Highlands. With a length of 18.5 km, Ngoan Muc Pass has the lowest point at about 200 meters above sea level and the highest point at about 980 meters. The average slope of the pass is more than 9 degrees, making it one of the steepest passes in the southern region.

A particularly notable feature of Ngoan Muc Pass is the significant difference from the foot to the top of the pass. Therefore, the climate here has a marked change with altitude. While at the bottom, the temperature is still hot, when going to the top of the pass, you will experience a cool, even chilly space. At the same time, the landscape on both sides of the road is beautiful with the maple forest and blooming wild sunflowers creating a charming picture.

History of the construction process of Ngoan Muc Pass
In 1893, Doctor Yersin discovered Da Lat and in 1897, Governor General Doumer and a group of researchers planned to build a road to connect Phan Rang, Ninh Thuan with Da Lat to serve the process. city construction.
Under the direction of French captain Thouars, the research team drew up a design for a 122 km long route, connecting from Phan Rang through Ninh Son valley to Dran town (present-day Don Duong). The original plan included going through Da Nhim valley, K’Long area at the foot of Elephant mountain and crossing Prenn pass to Dalat.
On this arduous journey, the French built the difficult pass now known as Ngoan Muc Pass (Song Pha) today along with a parallel cog railway built in 1917.
After the repair period by the French and Japanese, then the repair process by Vietnam, Ngoan Muc Pass has become a nature reserve recognized by the state according to Decision No. 194/CT of the Government. Chairman of the Council of Ministers, signed in August 1968.

Due to the steep slope, Ngoan Muc pass becomes more dangerous when slippery. So you limit going through the pass during rainy time. Climate change in Ngoan Muc pass
The Ninh Thuan Ngoan Muc Pass stretches from the Da Lat plateau to the coastal plains of the South Central Coast, giving each road its own unique climate.
As soon as you step into the pass, you will be impressed by the dense fog covering the trees. When it comes to medium altitude, everything becomes more spacious, fresh and the cool air will bring a feeling of relaxation and refreshment. However, when going through this road, you may encounter special weather, sometimes the typical hot sun of the sunny and windy land of Ninh Thuan, as well as chilly winds from the plateau. These weather conditions often occur at bends, especially at Eo Gio. Although the distance is less than 20 km, on that stretch, you will experience unique weather conditions, stretching from North to South. That feels like going through all four seasons during the journey.

Attractions near Ngoan Muc Pass
Da Nhim Hydropower Plant
After traveling through Ngoan Muc pass in Ninh Thuan , you can visit Da Nhim hydroelectric power plant, located near the foot of the pass. This is the first hydroelectric project in Vietnam, the project was built from 1962 to 1964 and then put into operation.
Da Nhim factory is also famous for its two parallel hydraulic hoses, a point that has attracted attention for a long time. Many people mistakenly believe that this is part of the road going through Ngoan Muc Pass. However, it is actually just two hydraulic water pipes 2km long, flowing from the top of the mountain to the foot of the pass.

Ngoan Muc Pass Nature Reserve
Deo Ngoan Muc Nature Reserve is located in Lam Son commune, Ninh Son, Ninh Thuan. Located on the slope to the East, this is the transition area between the coastal plain of South Central Vietnam and the plateau of Da Lat. In clear blue sky days, you can see the East Sea from here.

Necessary notes when conquering Ngoan Muc Pass
To conquer Ngoan Muc Pass , a beautiful and dangerous road, note the following:
- Use a manual or a clutch instead of a scooter because downhill and steep slopes are both dangerous, and using a scooter can be easy to slip and difficult to control.
- Be sure to wear adequate protective equipment such as helmets, knee and elbow belts.
- Thoroughly check the vehicle before departure, especially the brake system, the amount of gas and the condition of the tires. Should bring a spare gas bottle to prevent running out of gas in an empty place.
- The weather has a big difference between the foot of the pass and the top of the pass, so prepare a light jacket to avoid getting cold.
- When you want to stop to check-in at the top of the pass, park your car neatly in a corner, avoiding obstructing other vehicles climbing the slope.
